Restoration of marmoreal sculptures

The marmoreal fountain sculptures were unearthed. The marblestone is white, like Carrara. The surface is earth-brown and covered with crusts (mainly at the backside).

Sculpture 1 had been restored partly (polyester resin adhesive joints).

Sculpture 2 was delivered in 4 fragments.

The cleaning of the marmoreal sculptures was accomplished with pure water and brushes, removing the dirt. This brightened up the colour towards a more natural marble-surface, but left the patina staines and crusts. These crusts could be removed by scalpel or sandblasting – but the customer did not want that.

At one figure there were several new polyester resin adhesive joints. Polyester should not be used in stone restauration, because it embrittles soon. I used permanent elastic resins. I did not break these old adhesive joints, otherwise the surrounding stone would be destructed. In addition I could not detect if there are core crabs stuck in. One broken arm was not stuck on in line to the upper arm. My conclusion was to leave these old joints alone. I just removed the squeezed out polyester, filled the slits with artificial stone plaster and in case of the above mentioned arm retouched the small overlap. The void at the plinth was armed with steel and completed with artificial stone plaster.

The other figure was broken into pieces. Older rusty iron reinforcements coated with lead were removed, because of the loss by rust dilatation, which blasts the stone. The broken pieces were stuck together with permanent elastic resin and armed with stainless steel. The slits were filled with artificial stone plaster.
